terraMasala is a self-taught drummer/percussionist/electronics (based in Belgium-Europe) who's love for music has entangled with his passion for travelling (in India).
On these travels he discovered some amazing beautiful music, both traditional and modern, that influenced and inspired him intensely.
He tries to capture and reproduce part of his travels by translating them into a piece of music.
"...tM's music is very visual..." -Dr.Das (co-founder/ex bass player of -Asian Dub Foundation-)
Born and raised in the early seventies in Belgium/Europe - culturally and musically not the most exciting of places - his major musical influence was his Dad and his enormous record collection,
containing music -ranging from Joao Gilberto, Led Zeppelin, Zappa, Return to Forever, Ravi Shankar, The Police, King Crimson and spreading over more than 5000 other artists/titles.
Although his Dad worked for over 20 years for record labels and management companies, he himself only started playing music and learning drums at the age of seventeen.
A few years of self-teaching, and one (failed) attempt to study at the Jazz-Studio in Antwerp, he traded his drum-kit for a backpack and started travelling for many years.
During those years, he travelled with a Darbuka and was the only instrument he would be playing.
Only somewhere in the half of the last decade tM added the Indian tabla to the percussion setup. Yet, same story....no teachers.
He is fascinated by grooves and the tonal sounds coming from percussion instruments rather than becoming a master on one specific instrument.
"...I tried many times to get the theory into my head and system...but just couldn't get it...looking back at my school days...I've always been a disaster when it involves maths...
and that's what drum notation is to me....so I freak out..." - terraMasala
After years of trotting around, his base (for now) is Antwerp/Belgium where he is currently working on a first E.P. with a few guest-musicians. A blend of lounging (in a moving train) with some percussive elements in a sauce of constant dreaming.
